One of the main highlights of the new 2022 Ford Ranger is the introduction of a 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel engine. Unfortunately, Ford did not give any horsepower figures for this engine, or for any engine to be offered for that matter. The only detail that the company shared is that it “feels really tough in the sense that it’s got endless power and torque, which is exactly what our customers wanted”.

Considering that diesel engines are not that popular here in North America, the chances of Ford offering this engine on our market are slim. Nevertheless, it wouldn’t hurt for us to imagine what a torquey diesel-fed V-6 Ranger would feel like.

As for the other diesel engines, this will be a 2.0-liter diesel in single- and twin-turbo configurations. In the outgoing Ranger, the single-turbo motor produced 180 horsepower and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque, while the twin-turbo diesel produced 210 horsepower and 370 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

Ford will also continue to offer the 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo gasoline engine, though just like the other engines, Ford did not provide any power figures. For the outgoing model, it produced 269 horsepower and 310 lb-ft (410 Nm) of torque.

Transmission options for the new 2022 Ford Ranger include a 10-speed automatic, 6-speed automatic, and a 6-speed manual.

The company also says it has a hydro-formed front-end structure that’s designed to accommodate the bigger V6 engine while also allowing a high degree of electrification. Additionally, this structure enables more airflow to the radiator, which helps keep operating temperatures low when towing or carrying heavy loads.

Ford also improved the Ranger’s ride and handling through its 1.97-inch longer wheelbase and 1.97-inch wider body, revised suspension, among other structural improvements

Ford also made improvements to its ride and handling capabilities. By moving the front wheels forward by 50 mm (1.97 in), its approach angle and wheel articulation has been improved. The rear leaf spring suspension dampers have also been moved outboard of the frame rails as a way to improve its ride both on- and off-road. Off-road recovery is also made easier with the prominent dual recovery hooks in the front bumper.

Despite most automakers proudly proclaiming their intention to shift toward EV-dominant portfolios, customers haven’t been sharing their enthusiasm. While there’s a subset of loyal early adopters that are eager to see electrification become the norm, the relative infancy of the technology and prevalent gaps in the charging infrastructure has kept them from becoming a majority. But manufacturers seem to think it’s just a matter of time and that they’ll be able to make up the difference through fleet sales.

Advertised with lower than average operating costs and juicy subsidies being offered throughout the developed world, automakers have convinced themselves that EVs will soon become the de facto rides for various entities needing to round out their stables. Meanwhile, we’re hearing inklings that Ford is seeing pushback from fleet customers over its s new F-150 Lightning pickup and E-Transit van. 

Blue Oval believes that its new vehicles, combined with an updated version of its fleet management suite prioritizing telematics and data accumulation, will result in a glut of customers interested in having more direct control over their commercial armadas. The fact that they’ll also be EVs is supposed to make them further appetizing, due to government incentives and the fact that they won’t require fueling.

“[The Lightning and E-Transit] are targeted at real people doing real work,” Ted Cannis, chief executive of Ford Pro, stated at Reuters’ recent Automotive Summit.

But some of those potential fleet buyers are taking a “wait and see” attitude, partly from a lack of experience with electric vehicles and partly from a lack of clarity on government policy and regulations around EVs.

Those are not insurmountable obstacles over the longer term, according to Cannis, who told Reuters:

“In the U.S., we see 70 [percent] of the full-size bus and van industry going electric by 2030. That’s more than 300,000 vehicles annually. And we expect a third of the full-size pickup (market) to go all-electric by 2030, which is more than 800,000 vehicles annually.”

With electric work trucks and vans, Cannis said, fleet customers can save money on fuel, maintenance and repairs, “but there is still a fear of the unknown” about EVs among both employees and managers.

Perhaps by 2030, the necessary infrastructure will be in place to facilitate widespread EV adoption and they’ll have reached financial parity with internal combustion vehicles. But electrics currently require more advanced planning to get the most out of their powertrains and you have to pay more for them upfront to save money over time. Some of the fleet managers we’ve spoken to said they’ve had difficulties figuring out how to make EVs work for their businesses. Concerns have also been expressed about their lackluster resale values, the potential for charging downtime, and how much money would need to be spent to replace a battery system. Though the latter issue isn’t likely to come up considering how short most fleet cycles happen to be.

On the other hand, managers were almost universally interested in the government incentives being promoted by the Biden administration and wondered if the changing regulatory landscape might make soon make EVs a necessary addition to their garages. Governor Gavin Newsom has repeatedly said that California will gradually phase out internal combustion vehicles and may even begin prohibiting diesel trucks from utilizing certain roadways in a bid to reduce pollution. Many other states are politically aligned with California and are likely to follow its lead. These are considerations business owners are preoccupied with. But there’s no concrete legislation at play to make any of the above a guarantee and the free market (or what’s left of it) isn’t quite ready to place EVs on a pedestal.

Cannis seems undaunted, however. He’s claiming that everyone who has driven the all-electric F-Series believes it to be the most exciting full-sized pickup Ford has produced, pointing to the 150,000 preorders as evidence.

It’s actually more than the automaker can realistically manufacture. In August, Blue Oval doubled its production target to 80,000 Lightings annually as a way to meet demand. But that capacity isn’t supposed to be achieved until 2024 and the model launches in 2022. Frankly, with the pickup obviously exceeding projections before anyone has had an opportunity to really shake one down (Ford has allowed a few high-profile influencers and Joe Biden to drive the prototype), it’s strange that the head of Ford’s commercial fleet division would even bother to mention that the company has been getting pushback from customers.

Our guess is that certain types of businesses just don’t see EVs as feasible right now. We noticed receptiveness varied heavily based upon what kind of work fleet managers needed vehicles to do. Localized fleets focused on precise routes with predictable downtimes are ideal for electrification. But long-haulers taking varied routes have less use for EVs and far fewer options to realistically choose from.

The U.S. government has also faced difficulties meeting the Biden administration’s ambitious goal to electrify the entire federal fleet. For starters, many government rides (particularly those used by the USPS) boast some of the longest lifespans of any fleet vehicles you’re likely to encounter. That adds meaningful financial risks if they select the wrong product just to spur on EV adoption.

The current federal fleet encompasses about 657,000 vehicles in total. However, agencies had only purchased about 500 zero-emissions vehicles through August of 2021, and data from the General Services Administration (GSA) currently cites EVs as comprising less than 1 percent of the whole. The transition has progressed slowly, with officials citing supply issues and difficulties choosing the right vehicles for various departments as the biggest obstacles.

“The opportunities are clear, but first we need to acknowledge that we are starting from a low baseline,” White House national climate adviser Gina McCarthy said during June’s GSA FedFleet Conference. “I want to thank the thousands of fleet management professionals leading this charge and demonstrating our leadership and commitment to winning the future. The many agencies that will work together to achieve our goals exemplify the whole-of-government approach to tackling the climate crisis.”

With the sheer amount of marketing materials out there promoting electrification and encouraging businesses to establish EV-focused fleets, it’s often difficult to get a genuine sense of how things are actually progressing. Ford says the Lightning is already exceeding expectations. But the head of Ford Pro said customers were expressing hesitancy. The federal government is dead set on replacing combustion vehicles with EVs. But it has failed to put more than 500 units onto the road. Manufacturers are promoting electric cars at every turn. But pure electrics still make up a minuscule share of what’s actually being sold to customers.

It hasn’t done much to assuage my skepticism going into 2022. But 2030 should provide plug-ins with sufficient time to continue maturing. Considering how much better EVs have gotten over the last decade, future EVs should be capable of handling new challenges and giving internal combustion cars a run for their money. Or they could fail to see the necessary infrastructure and technology develop and end up like autonomous driving — another unfulfilled industrial promise.

Buy/Drive/Burn: Economical American Compacts From 1982

Our recent Rare Rides coverage of the Chevrolet Citation made one thing very clear: We need more Citation content. Today’s 1982 Buy/Drive/Burn lineup was suggested by commenter eng_alvarado90, who would like to see all of you struggle. Citation, Aries, Escort, all in their most utilitarian formats. Let’s go.

Chevrolet Citation

The Citation is in its third model year for 1982, and sales have already fallen far from their initial peak of 800,000. The bloom is off this rose, but GM is still on track for six-digit sales this year. Sticking firmly to economy and utility, today’s Citation is a five-door hatchback equipped with the 2.5-liter Iron Duke inline-four and paired to a four-speed manual. Throttle-body injection is new this year and means 90 horses are underfoot. There’s also a new horizontal slats grille.

Dodge Aries K

The Dodge Aries is still new and is in its second model year for 1982. Chrysler started out strong last year with over 300,000 sales, and will likely reach that number again in ’82. Today’s Aries is the four-door wagon, as Chrysler does not offer a hatchback K-car at this level. Underhood is the base 2.2-liter Chrysler inline-four, which uses a two-barrel carb. Eighty-four horses are at the driver’s command, shifted through a four-speed manual. New this year: rear windows roll down on sedans and wagons, replacing the fixed glass.

Ford Escort

Ford’s Escort is also in its second model year for 1982. The American market Escort was supposed to be very similar to the European one for parts sharing purposes. However the respective design teams each headed their own direction, and the two cars share only an engine and transmission. Today’s five-door Escort hatchback is new for ’82, along with a new grille and presence of the familiar Ford Blue Oval. The base 1.6-liter CVH engine gets a high output version this year, which increases power by about 10 horses, to 80. Power is delivered to the front via a four-speed Ford MTX manual.

Economy and cheap driving are available to you, and they’ll probably hold up for at least three years before falling apart. Which gets the Buy?

To be more specific the Mach-E set a world record for the amount of distance driven with 1 kWh. It managed 6.54 miles (10.5 km) for 1 kWh. To have a crack at the record a trip was organized from St. John O’Groats – a Scottish village at the very tip of Northern Scotland – to Land’s End – the most Western point in Southern UK.

The total distance driven by the Mach-E was 840 miles (1,352km) with two stops for charging, taking 45 minutes total. The version used for the trip was the Ford Mustang Mach-E Extended Range RWD version. This means 294 horsepower going to the rear wheels only and an 88 kWh battery. The Mach-E Extended Range RWD also has an EPA rating of 379 miles (610 km) combined.

At the beginning of the test, the car was fully charged and with three people on board. The drivers were BBC correspondent Paul Clifton, Fergal McGrath, and Kevin Brooke, none of which strangers to such undertakings. The test took place on July 3rd, 2021, and took 27 hours to complete.

It’s worth noting that whilst the record is impressive, the car was driven at an average speed of 31 mph (50 km/h), so at highway speeds, the efficiency will drop by at least 25 percent.

Nevertheless, “This record is about demonstrating that electric cars are now viable for everyone. Not just for short urban trips to work or the shops or as a second car, but for real-world use on long cross-country journeys. We’ve proved that, with this car, the tipping point has been reached” – the team shared.

Of course, the driving performed in the test aimed to squeeze as much range as possible from the Mach-E. That said, even though no one will be driving at 31 mph (50 km/h) on the highway, it’s good to know that EVs are not good just for short trips or getting the groceries, but can actually provide enough range for a range anxiety-free road trip. Now, it remains to be seen how much more range can EV manufacturers squeeze from their EV architectures.

Ford to Drop Diesel F-150 This Week

Ford

Sorry, diesel fans. Just three years after introducing a Power Stroke diesel for the F-150, Ford is dropping the diesel option.

And doing so with haste.

If you want to grab one of the last ones available, you have until Friday to do it.

Part of the problem, says Autoblog, is that the turbocharged gas options make more power and cost less than the diesel’s $4,995 price. They offer better towing capacity, to boot.

There’s also a hybrid model that is slightly cheaper, has slightly better towing, and is on par in terms of fuel economy.

Of course, diesel engines offer something gas engines don’t — low-end grunt.

While the diesel no longer seems to be the best powertrain option on paper, some buyers will still miss it. For the rest, special order by Friday or forever hold your peace.

Ford F-150 gets rammed in the second quarter

The all-new 2021 Ford F-150 Lariat.

Ram beat the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado for leadership in the closely-watched pickup truck sales race during the second quarter of 2021. The sales victory comes as Ram celebrates its 10th anniversary as an independent of brand by threatening to break Ford Motor Co.’s four-decade hold on pickup truck sales leadership.

Hobbled for months by the shortages of semiconductors, Ford surrendered F-150 sales leadership to Stellantis’s Ram 1500. Ram pickup trucks rose 28.5% to 164,232 units, even as the F-150’s declined 12.5% to 158,235. General Motors reported sales of 161,706 Chevrolet Silverados and 75,495 GMC Sierra pickup trucks. With combined sales of 237,201 light-duty Silverados and Sierras, GM claimed segment victory, with deliveries increasing from 174,568 in the second quarter last year.

Ram’s lead suggests that for the first time in years, Ford’s leadership in pickup truck sales is under serious threat. If Ford continues to see production shortfalls, Ram could claim the crown, but they’ll have to work hard to do it. Ford remains the segment leader with 362,032 units sold in the first six months of 2021 vs. Ram’s 313,068. Chevrolet is third at 161,706 units, followed by GMC at 75,495. Toyota and Nissan round put the segment with sales of 43,865 and 17,776 units.

The sales victory, however transitory, comes as Ram reaches a milestone. Having been part of Dodge until a decade ago, Ram is celebrating its 10 years of independence with the 2022 Ram 1500 Limited 10th Anniversary Edition.

“Ram 1500 Limited buyers have enjoyed the highest quality materials for a decade now and the Limited 10th Anniversary Edition is the latest example of how Ram delivers the most luxurious pickups in the industry,” said Mike Koval Jr., Ram Brand Chief Executive Officer.

The new special edition is distinguished by its unique “Blue Shade” paint, Ram’s multifunction tailgate that swings open as well as up and down, a center-mounted bed step and adjustable cargo tie down hooks. Climb inside and you’ll find a cabin lined in real wood, metal, suede and quilted leather. A 19-speaker premium sound system, metal pedals and special badging complete the makeover. Driveline choices are among the Ram 1500’s most fuel efficient: the 395-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 eTorque mild-hybrid, or the 260-horsepower 3.0-liter EcoDiesel. Prices start at $60,175, plus $1,695 destination.

The new model joins the Ram 1500’s high-performance 1500 TRX Crew Cab, with its Hellcat-like persona. But Ford isn’t standing still either as it expands its F-150 line-up with an all-electric version of its best-selling vehicle.

Marchionne’s move proves wise

The Ram 1500 Limited 10th Anniversary Edition commemorates newly-minted Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne splitting Dodge’s Ram trucks from Dodge, creating its own brand. “This reorganization will allow us to protect and develop the unique nature of the product offerings within the Dodge Brand,” Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said at the time.

By extricating Ram from Dodge, Marchionne thought the truck brand would gain a unique identity, allowing Dodge to focus on its image as a performance brand. The move came four months after Chrysler completed its bankruptcy reorganization that would lead to the creation of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, now known as Stellantis. The wisdom of the strategy can be seen in the ensuing years.

When the strategy was announced in 2009, Dodge, with its Dodge Ram truck line sold 522,686 units. Ten years later, Dodge and Ram, now separate marques, sold a combined 1,125,090 units, a 53.6% increase. Even when compared to 2020’s sales, impacted by the Pandemic, deliveries have remained strong at 891,970 units, a 41.4% rise from 2009. Memo to Ford: watch your back.

Ford Motor Co. is recalling over 660,000 2016-2019 model year Explorer sport utility vehicles over the suspect roof rails the company initially claimed were probably fine. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration got involved last year, following a string of complaints of the rail cover loosening and sometimes being jettisoned from the vehicle, and recommended the automaker bring them in for repairs.

But Blue Oval felt that was unnecessary, claiming the odds of one decoupling were extremely low and likely to be battened down before anything happens. Besides, they’re just fiddly little pieces of trim and unlikely to do much damage. Obviously, opinions have changed since then with documentation from the NHTSA confirming Ford is moving ahead with the mostly voluntary recall. 

A report, first shared by Reuters, verifies that Ford’s Critical Concerns Review Group was informed in May of 2020 — immediately after the NHTSA made its inquiry to the automaker. At the time there were 11 reports of detaching or loosening rail covers. Ford launched an investigation that wrapped in August of 2020, suggesting that the component was of low risk and would likely be noticed rattling long before it ended up flying off the car. However, Ford did extend its warranty to cover the issue for 10 years or 150,000 miles before this year’s recall was made.

The automaker met with regulators again in April. While Ford maintained that continued research showed the risks were low, especially in regard to heavier, plated roof rails, the NHTSA still wanted a recall. A compromise was reached and the recall now pertains exclusively to rail covers that have been painted silver or black. It looks like the thinner, plastic sleeves don’t stand up as well to the thermocycling created by direct sunlight — which is what Ford’s blaming their failure upon.

Customers will be receiving notifications from the manufacturer starting June 28th and can schedule an appointment to have their potentially warped rail covers replaced free of charge.

Professional Troll Elon Musk At It Again

In addition to Elon Musk’s title as CEO — sorry, Technoking — of Tesla, along with his role as boss of SpaceX, we need to add professional troll to his resume.

How else to explain his latest Twitter spat?

For those who didn’t see it, Ford chief Jim Farley tweeted out a video touting the brand’s new BlueCruise hands-free driving system that had what many interpreted as a subtle dig at Tesla.

Tesla, you see, has been accused, fairly in my view, of using its customers as unwitting guinea pigs in the testing of its so-called “Full-Self Driving” system.

We’ll pause here to note that there is no car on the market that offers true self-driving. A fully autonomous experience would be classified as level 5 autonomy, and no car is beyond level 2. Tesla’s system is level 2. Our friendly rivals at Jalopnik won’t even use Tesla’s terminology anymore because it’s misleading, and dangerously so, and as TTAC boss, I’ve been thinking of following suit. While we strive to be fair in our journalism, we also exist to report the truth, and the truth is that Tesla’s system isn’t full-self driving, no matter what it calls it. And Tesla’s marketing actually is dangerously misleading, since consumers might believe their cars can do more autonomous driving than they actually can, potentially leading to accidents.

So, Ford called Tesla out. And Musk clapped back with a clip from the 1995 comedy Tommy Boy, which starred Farley’s late cousin, Chris. The clip showed a scene from the movie in which the 1967 Plymouth Belvedere GTX driven by the characters portrayed by Farley and David Spade experiences a hood malfunction at speed because Tommy Callahan Jr. (Farley) didn’t remove the oil can after a fuel stop.

At least one automotive reporter called out Musk on Twitter for being mean. As we all know, Farley died young of a drug overdose, and it’s arguably pretty awful to tease someone by dredging up footage of their late cousin acting in a movie — one in which he plays a guy who can be, at times, a bit of idiot.

That aside, it bugs me on another level. There’s a discourse now that pervades our politics, our sports, and almost everything else in which someone gets called out for doing something that most people would say is wrong — in Tesla’s case, using a marketing term that is misleading and dangerously so — and instead of working to correct the issue, decides to lash out in an attempt to hurt the critic.

In other words, instead of tweeting back at Ford, Musk should be working on either making FSD actually a truly self-driving system, or more realistically, coming up with a better name for it that doesn’t imply that it does more than it actually is capable of. Say what you want about BlueCruise or GM’s SuperCruise, neither implies that they are level 5 systems that allow the car to completely drive itself. And last I checked, GM’s Super Bowl ad made it clear SuperCruise only works on certain roads.

This is nothing new for Musk. But it’s intellectually dishonest bullshit and I am tired of it. As a society, we’ve spent too long now — at least half a decade — allowing powerful people to act like this when they’re called out or criticized. It’s childish behavior and we’re enabling it.

Musk isn’t the only one guilty of this. A certain ex-president is a master of it, as are certain politicians from both sides of the aisle, at all levels. Give me five minutes and I could think up a whole ton of athletes and celebs and pundits and contrarian journalists who embrace this type of behavior, especially on Twitter.

But since Musk runs the most divisive car company of our era, he’s our focus for this post.

I don’t know if what he tweeted to Farley is truly mean or not. Or if it is or isn’t funny.

I do know that it’s a deflection from Tesla’s misleading marketing, and that’s the problem.
