Volkswagen is picking up where it left off in the 90’s with the last true sportscar they had, the Corrado, by introducing the latest generation Scirocco and Scirocco R. Don’t get too excited though since we likely will not see it arrive here in North America. It will though however give us some insight into how its similar platformed sibling, the GOLF R, will be once it is released on our market.
The Scirocco R will use a modified high power version of VW’s popular turbocharged 2.0L 4 cylinder producing 265HP at 6000 RPM and 258 lb-ft of torque from 2500-5000 RPM. This will propel the Scriocco R from 0-60 in 6.5 second with the manual transmission and 6.4 seconds using the six speed DSG dual clutch transmission.
Technology and styling a plenty, the Scirocco R will be available with standard electronic differential named XDS. It will eliminate understeer by applying brake pressure to the inside wheel which will send more torque to the outer wheel while under high speed cornering. The interior is laced with black and aluminum trim, flat bottom race like steering wheel and the seats use Kyalami fabric named after the South African race track. Darkened tail lights line the rear end, 18″ wheels (with 19″ available) on 235/40 rubber give the car a wide stance and LED daytime lights set the front end off with stylistic flare.
